Guiding patients and providers to the right healthcare program

This 15-year-old website was due for a redesign - in both aesthetics and content structure. Our team viewed and organized pages into categories before creating a design system for five page templates that could support the existing content as well as any future content that the client might author.

Content Components

Whatever we designed, everyone agreed it must be scalable and reusable. So the atomic design system was born. After reviewing all of the content, we created elements that would create a consistent design language throughout the entire experience. These building blocks (atoms) would come together to form various template layouts for any existing and future content.

Key Takeaways

Design Thinking workshops are hard.

Planning has always come natural to me, so prepping materials and scheduling a 3-day workshop was simple. Standing up and facilitating was not. I understand now that this takes practice and I feel more comfortable each time.

They might not like it right away.

Tough criticism on the work that you're actually proud of is a really bummer. However, in this case, the feedback came down to personal preference. Working more closely with the client to understand how design decisions support the business goals and user needs established trust and things ran smoothly from there.

Technical expertise is invaluable.

We were not as familiar with the CMS as we would have hoped to be and needed a technical expert to validate our designs. If I had pushed for this in the staffing plan a little harder, it would have saved us a lot of rework.
